ABSTRACT
DISTANCE LEARNING:
A NEW ERA IN EDUCATION

AN OVERVIEW OF ITS DEVELOPMENT AND
POTENTIAL

By: Dr. Kadem Al-Bahrani
Director of Distance Learning Center

The paper endeavors and attempts to shed view on the light of the development of the distance learning system of education and its potential in regards to its implementation in the Arab world in general and at Kuwait University specifically.

Both the international world and the Arab world have not, and will not, abandon the traditional method of education for the distance learning method, at least not for the time being. However, the distance learning method is used as a supplementary system in the educational process. It has overcome the time factor obstacle that prevents those whose work and general day-to-day responsibilities from having time and has overcome the geographical barriers that may prevent some from learning through the traditional system. This fact has allowed for a larger number and a wider scale of people to benefit from this system. It has been especially beneficial for those seeking a higher degree, i.e. graduate degree, without requiring them to leave the comfort and security of their jobs and without interrupting their careers.

Without a doubt, it hadn’t been for the tremendous and rapid development in communication and information technology, especially with regards to the Internet or Super Highway, distance learning wouldn’t have been as attractive of a proposition. However, now more than ever, it has become increasingly obvious and apparent that no nation can stand alone in face of this vast untapped education resource. Cooperation among nations and academic and training institutions is a must, be this cooperation international, regional, or locally in the Arab world.

Distance Learning, as it exists now, is relatively young and will require much study and development in order to grow into a full-fledged method of teaching. However, its potential can not be denied and we as a university and an academic institution have responsibility to develop and adopt it as our own in order to ensure the success and evolution of our society.
